Policy in Merlin is about making a difference. It is about providing the evidence to inform and inspire decision makers - whether internationally, in the UK, or in the countries in which Merlin works - to make the changes needed to ensure the most vulnerable people in some of the poorest countries have access to the health care they need. This is quite a challenge.
In these contexts what can be done to ensure better access to health care? Who should provide this health care? How should it be financed? Merlin’s work in policy uses the first hand experience from our programmes to provide practical examples of what works best in these contexts, and helps provide answers to questions like these.
In the 2009-2011 period Merlin’s work in policy and influencing will:
- Use Merlin’s support to health services to better understand and improve the provision of health care and strengthening health systems in difficult contexts
- Use Merlin’s presence in a range of countries to ensure international engagement supports improved health systems and access to health care in fragile states
- Use Merlin’s experience in responding to disasters to help support improved disaster response in the health sector
- Use Merlin’s position in a range of fragile state contexts to improve understanding of the nature of these contexts (including transition) and the interaction with health.
