War fever

This hand-drawn, child’s picture captures the violence in Darfur. Nearly 30% of all malaria deaths in Africa are caused by conflict. That’s around 300,000 lives lost every year, most of them children. Their fragile immune systems mean they haven’t yet built up immunity to the disease. Living in overcrowded camps with basic food and shelter puts them at greater risk of being bitten by mosquitoes and infected. Controlling the disease in displaced communities is also incredibly difficult: often more people die from malaria than are actually killed in the conflict.
