This includes all tuition and a copy of the Sphere Project Manual, refreshments and a light lunch. This is a three day non-residential introductory course which has been designed to give potential humanitarian aid workers a realistic view of some of the key issues related to working in the humanitarian aid sector.
Aim The aim of the course is to give participants an overview of becoming a relief worker in the humanitarian aid sector. It will cover the common issues encountered, how to prepare yourself for a role in the field and how to manage your own expectations.
Objectives By the end of the course participants will: • Understand the relief environment and the principles of humanitarian aid • Be aware of the Sphere code of conduct and its application • Appreciate the issues and problems that they may encounter whilst working in the field, and be able to prepare themselves appropriately • Understand how humanitarian work is funded • Know how a typical field response is carried out • Appreciate how cross-cultural issues may have an impact on a humanitarian relief programme • Question and learn from experienced humanitarian workers who have spent time in the field
Content The content will include: the relief environment; principles & effects of humanitarian aid, including the Red Cross Code of Conduct; an example of a typical field response; funding and finance; team working; personal health, safety and preparations; security; cross cultural issues; introduction to field logistics and communications; a talk by a recently returned volunteer.
The trainers The course will be delivered by experienced international aid workers. Participants are encouraged to share their perspectives and ideas throughout the course.
