We’re delighted to announce that Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has nominated Merlin for the 2009 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize.
Announcing the Hilton Prize nomination, Johnson-Sirleaf said, "As I searched for partners, I found Merlin – already saving lives in Liberia for over a decade, and already preparing to rebuild a sustainable health care system for our people.”
The Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize is the world's largest humanitarian award and was established by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in the US in 1996.
The annual $1.5 million award honours a charitable or non-governmental organisation that has made extraordinary contributions to alleviating human suffering anywhere in the world.
Merlin has been working in Liberia since 1997 and now helps to deliver a third of the country’s health care.
"No humanitarian organisation has been more instrumental in rebuilding Liberia’s health care system from emergency to recovery than Merlin," the President said.
The recipient of this prestigious Prize will be announced in Autumn 2009.
